About Surf 64

The Surf 64 mission is to document early surfing film and photos from the general public's home movies. Seen alone, many of these images may not seem important, but collectively they portray amore realistic view of our surf culture as it was during that time. While the surfing scenes can be enjoyable to watch, it is those iconic scenes of young people interacting that sets the tone of the documentaries produced by Surf 64. Old film deteriorates - have your film transferred soon.

This is what I do, I collect surf related film, photos and documentation from various sources, develop a theme, and interview as many people as I can associated with the film. My primary emphasis is East Coast U.S. surfing from the 1970's back to it's earliest roots. While these videos do feature some of the East Coast Surfing Hall of Fame Inductees, the real stories come from the old home movies from surfers who were not in the limelight.

In the 80's I started converting film for my friends and myself. These were very rough VHS tapes with a music track. By the mid 90's I saw the potential for digital imaging, so I invested in the equipment to do better editing. I started Surf 64 Productions, Ltd.in the late 90's and since then have digitalized hundreds of reels of home movies from surfers all over.

Many of these surfers are seeing themselves surfing on film for the first time in 30 or 40 years. It is amazing to see how similar the films are from surfers all over the East Coast. After all, we were influenced by West Coast surf media and music. I truly enjoyed all of those West Coast movies that documented early surfing, and idolize every one of those guys.

But, being from the East Coast, the guy I admire most for early film documentation is East Coast Surfing Hall of Fame Inductee, Bill Yerkes. His second version of Summer of 67 is proof of his talent. I am grateful to Bill, but who I want to thank most are those surfers who contributed their films and pictures for my projects.
