An East Coast Surf Documentary
The Third in a series of surf documentaries by
SURF64 PRODUCTIONS,LTD.
Where There's a Will, There's a Wave
A Will Lucas Production
"Boardshorts" is set to be released in October 2007. Will Lucas is a 61 year old active surfer who has been traveling the coast in search of waves for 43 years. He approached the concept for the movie from his own surfing experiences. While the East Coast Surfing Documentary "Board Shorts" does feature two East Coast Surfing Hall of Fame Legends, Yancy Spencer III and "Balsa" BillYerkes, the movie is really about the average surfer's experience back in the 60's and 70's. Surfers from New England, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina and Florida share their experiences and old film in a fun and entertaining manner. Interviews are combined with new and old surfing videos and some outstanding music.
The Cape Fear Region of North Carolina is represented well with interviews, surfing clips (both vintage and contemporary) and local music. Joseph Skipper Funderburg and Mike Spencer both tell informative stories from back in the 60's, when surfing on the Carolina Coast was in its infancy. There are many vintage surfing clips that identify dozens of surfers from that period. Some of the music was provided by two Wrightsville Beach area bands: The Noseriders and Da Howlies.
There are 12 short scenes in the main movie and topics include early board design, local laws designed to
displace surfers, parties on the beach, surf teams, the effect of the Vietnam Conflict on surfers, a fun look at the "cultural changes" we faced in the late 60's and how one surfer gave up drugs and alcohol to better his life and help others. While there are a few serious moments in the film, it is mostly about fun. Anyone surfing in the 60's and 70's will relate to these stories.
The main movie is52 minutes long and there is an extras menu with an additional 36 minutes of video. This collective effort was made possible by the many generous surfers and their families who provided the film used in the project. Not satisfied just to show dozens of early surfers from the 60's and 70's, the film also includes current video of some of the people you will see in the lineup today.
