Through the generosity of so many surfers and their families, Board Shorts offers a fun and informative glimpse at the surfing lifestyle on the East Coast and Gulf Coasts in the 1960's and 70's. The project started with a series of interviews based on my own surfing experiences during that period. Questions were posed to surfers form various areas, and as the interviews were consolidated, it was obvious that these surfers all faced similar challenges. The interviews seem to come to life when combined with the many photos and films made available during the two year course of producing the documentary. As each reel of film was dissected, an obvious pattern developed: a new sport was born and society did not know how to handle it.
The old 8mm films not only show kids out having fun, but offer a realistic view of our overall culture at the time. The films show a generation that would not sit idly by and watch the sport being banned. It shows a generation raised on experimentation - surfing reflected life - life reflected surfing. Experimentation was reflected in music as well, and was a significant part of growing up during that period. So, it was important to pick just the right songs for the project.
Each scene has a great soundtracks, much of it contributed by local artists from the areas featured. Artist include Brian Bobb, Da Howlies, Ken Holt, Tim Musser as well as The Noseriders. Songs were selected that fit the mood of each scene, and when added to the interviews and films, all of a sudden the movie seemed to come together. This movie is not designed to be the history of surfing on the East and Gulf Coasts, but simply a look into the past as told by a few of the people who were pioneers in the sport. Surfing has changed in many respects, but one thing is clear: it's just plain fun.
There are 7 additional mini movies totaling 36 minutes on the “Extras” menu, including tributes to fallen surfers Jim McNulty and Bill Wise. (Click on the links to play tributes.)
